Honda’s Rebelle Rally Teams Navigate 2019 Honda Passport and 2018 Ridgeline Across Nevada and California Desert

  • Honda engineers ready for adventure of a lifetime in all-women 2019 Rebelle Rally off-road navigation event
  • Honda Passport and Ridgeline showcase off-road capabilities of Honda light trucks across 1,600 miles of challenging terrain

A group of Honda engineers will pursue their outdoor passions and take the company’s product development efforts to the next level as they tackle the 2019 Rebelle Rally, an all-women off-road navigation event in the United States. Starting October 10, two driver/navigator teams of engineers from Honda R&D Americas, Inc. (HRA) in California and Ohio will compete in the Rebelle Rally, the second straight year Honda has participated.

Kicking off on October 10 at Lake Tahoe, the Rebelle Rally covers eight days of competition that traverses the western portion of Nevada, crossing into Southern California to finish at the Imperial Sand Dunes. It’s not a race for speed, but a unique and demanding event where the teams strategically navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint – within set windows of time – using only maps, compasses, and a roadbook.

Team Challenging Spirit (#203) to Drive the 2018 Honda Ridgeline

Team Challenging Spirit #203 features Sharon Moore, HRA senior engineering technician based in Torrance, California, and Michelle Klein, HRA crash safety test engineer based in Raymond, Ohio, who will return for her second Rebelle Rally to navigate the 2018 Ridgeline. Moore’s role at HRA is to create full-scale models of future Honda and Acura vehicles, helping designers and engineers realize their ideas in three dimensions. Past projects have included the first-generation Honda Ridgeline, first-generation Honda Element, and the Acura CLX concept car (1995), as well as contributing to the Honda GRX (2006) and Acura Bike Tour Trike (Velomobile) concepts.

Klein is the only returning Rebelle Rally competitor from 2018, and has been a mentor for her teammates. As part of the safety engineering team at Honda R&D Americas, she conducts whiplash testing to study and improve the safety of Honda and Acura products. Klein has worked on safety testing for many vehicles, including the 2016 Honda Pilot, 2016 Honda Civic, 2016 Honda Odyssey, 2016 Honda Ridgeline, and the 2019 Acura RDX.

“I want every woman to experience this type of life-changing event of facing their own inner fears of failure with bravery, endurance and determination,” said Klein. “Last year’s Rebelle Rally was a transformational experience for me and I am grateful for the opportunity to mentor and help new drivers cross the finish line.”

Team Sand Mode (#208) to Navigate the 2019 Honda Passport

Team Sand Mode #208 features Liz Casteel, HRA chassis reliability test engineer based in Raymond, Ohio, and Tasha Krug, HRA engine systems and drivability test engineer – also based in Raymond, Ohio – who will compete in the 2019 Passport. Casteel helps guarantee the reliability of Honda and Acura vehicles through subframe and suspension testing, which includes in-lab and on-car strength, durability, and marketability analyses. She has been a member of the 2017 Honda Ridgeline and 2019 Acura RDX development teams.

“I am excited for the Rebelle Rally and look forward to facing the challenges that it will throw at us,” said Casteel. “It is a unique event that will bring our Honda team even closer through the adversities we will overcome.”

In her role at Honda R&D Americas, Krug calibrates engines and automatic idle-stop systems, which can enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in city driving. She has tested on-board diagnostics failsafe systems and was on the 2019 Acura RDX development team.

Design Inspiration for Honda Vehicle Wraps

The Rebelle Rally wrap for the 2018 Ridgeline was designed by Honda exterior designer Lili Melikian and celebrates Honda’s performance development heritage. The Ridgeline’s wrap is a simple expression of performance and dynamic motion, with the intent to make it look sporty, energetic, and eye-catching. The side of the Ridgeline features a “Triangulation” pattern, which was inspired by the navigation method drivers use to pinpoint their location in the wild. This involves mapping three nearby landmarks to determine where you are. Honda Rebelle Rally team members and supporters in Ohio and California also are represented in the wrap design.

The Rebelle Rally wrap for the 2019 Passport pays homage to Honda’s off-road heritage and offering accessibility to off-road adventures – much like the Rebelle Rally – by featuring an illustration of Honda’s iconic Mini Trail 70 on the 50th anniversary of its introduction.

Proving Ground for 2019 Honda Passport and 2018 Ridgeline

The Rebelle Rally provides a unique opportunity for Honda engineers to test the 2019 Passport and 2018 Ridgeline in the type of environments they’re designed to be driven in. Both vehicles are only lightly modified from stock. These modifications are mainly custom front and rear skid plates, more all-terrain off-road tires, auxiliary lights, roof rails, and an in-cabin tire rack.

The 2019 Passport is the newest addition to Honda’s award-winning SUV lineup and delivers a unique combination of on-road driving refinement and off-road capability along with best-in-class interior space. The 2018 Ridgeline pickup truck won North American Truck of the Year for this generation’s first year in 2017, and is the only unibody midsize pickup available in the U.S. Both vehicles feature Honda’s highly advanced Intelligent Variable Torque Management™ (i-VTM4™) torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system that includes Intelligent Traction Management (ITM) modes of Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand that allows the driver to select the best all-wheel drive parameters for the environment.

2019 Honda Passport Earns an Autotrader ‘Best New Car for 2019’ Award

The all-new 2019 Honda Passport has been named a “Best New Car for 2019” by Autotrader, one of only 12 new vehicles to receive this recognition, chosen by unanimous decision by the Autotrader editorial experts.

“The Passport is one of the few SUVs where the ‘sport’ and ‘utility’ totally and tangibly make sense in the same vehicle,” said Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader. “We like the Passport because of its rugged look and just the way it comes off like a younger, feistier version of the Honda Pilot.”

The 2019 Passport, launched nationally on February 4, 2019, delivers a unique combination of on-road driving refinement and off-road capability along with best-in-class interior space among midsize two-row SUVs. The new Honda Passport was designed and developed by Honda R&D Americas and is made by Honda in its Lincoln, Alabama plant alongside the Honda Ridgeline pickup, the Pilot three-row SUV, and the Odyssey minivan, using domestic and globally-sourced parts.

2019 Honda Passport Wins Car and Driver Midsize Two-Row SUV Vehicle Comparison Test

The all-new 2019 Honda Passport bested four midsize two-row SUV competitors in Car and Driver’s “Meat in the Middle” comparison test featured in the April 2019 edition of the magazine.

Article Quote
“Snappy shifts and the V-6’s 280 horsepower produced the best zero-to-60, quarter-mile, and 50-to-70 passing times in the group, even as the Passport earned the best observed fuel economy. And despite being the tallest competitor, the Honda still compelled us to drive it quickly, courtesy of its light, accurate steering and goes-where-it’s-pointed response… The Passport is a picture of pragmatic service largely thanks to enormous interior space. Its pillars are thin and pushed far away, its greenhouse is massive, and it provides the most cargo volume here. Not only is the room ample, but Honda makes the best use of it by incorporating creative small-item storage throughout. If you’re looking in the middle of crossover land for some real meat, the Passport has the most to offer.”

Your Passport to Adventure: Honda Taps the Adventure-Seeker in All of Us to Introduce All-New 2019 Passport

  • Passport campaign introduces America to newest Honda SUV, more powerful than CR-V and more off-road ready and personal than Pilot
  • Integrated campaign emphasizes Passport’s sporty and rugged styling – perfect for exploring the great outdoors and enjoying its on-road refinement
  • Campaign stretches across TV, print, outdoor, radio and digital with a larger social initiative launching in spring

Honda is debuting an integrated marketing campaign for the 2019 Honda Passport (https://automobiles.honda.com/passport), “Your Passport to Adventure,” to highlight the highly capable and versatile adventurous spirit of Honda’s all-new SUV: https://honda.us/YourPassporttoAdventure. With a modern, spacious interior and numerous high-tech features, the 2019 Passport fills an important role in Honda’s award-winning SUV lineup: larger and more powerful than CR-V and more off-road ready and personal than Pilot.

“Your Passport to Adventure” showcases the brand-new Honda Passport as the perfect vehicle for exploring the outdoors, playing off the vehicle’s name with passport-inspired stamps as a visual nod to the spirit of adventure. “Your Passport to Adventure” will air on television and be featured in print, out of home and on digital properties. In spring, the campaign expands to Honda’s social channels with additional engaging content geared toward inspiring outdoor enthusiasts. The Passport’s social campaign will also tap adventure influencers to document their experiences, including some daring adventures with Passport.

“Our new ‘Your Passport to Adventure’ marketing campaign perfectly captures the kind of adventurous lifestyle the new 2019 Honda Passport was designed to help our customers fulfill,” said Susie Rossick, Assistant Vice President of Honda Auto Marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We created the campaign to showcase how the Honda Passport is comfortable and refined in everyday driving, but with an adventurous spirit that also lets you take off for the road less traveled.”

“Your Passport to Adventure” Campaign Elements
The 2019 Honda Passport marketing campaign begins airing on national TV starting this week – including during the biggest awards night for film in select markets– and features two :30 “Your Passport to Adventure” spots and a third :30 spot, titled “Sometimes.” In the first “Your Passport to Adventure” spot (https://honda.us/YourPassporttoAdventure), a couple goes on an epic cross-country trip traveling in and out of breathtaking terrains like pages in a passport book. The moments are punctuated by passport-inspired stamps. The second “Your Passport to Adventure” commercial (https://honda.us/YourPassporttoAdventureElite), highlights the rich feature content of the Passport Elite, including a wireless charger, ventilated seats and hands-free access power tailgate. “Sometimes” (https://honda.us/Sometimes) is composed of aspirational vignettes that show how the Passport Elite trim can be a partner in the quest for adventure. Aimed at reaching African American consumers, “Sometimes” highlights key Passport features, including Honda’s Intelligent Traction Management System, underfloor cargo area and hands-free access power tailgate. In addition to national TV, Passport media will include a mix of sports programming, including high-profile sporting events – during key NHL and NBA match-ups, as well as homepage takeovers on ESPN and CBS Sports, and will also run throughout primetime video on demand.

The outdoor campaign uses location-specific headlines to encourage people to get out of their respective cities and into the wilderness, which is often closer than they think. The imagery is based on the visual style found in actual passports, and each headline is made out of passport-inspired stamps. One billboard in Manhattan urges people to “Cross bridges beyond Brooklyn.” Another in Boston reminds people to “Leave the red brick roads behind.” The high impact out of home ads will run in top markets including Los Angeles, New York, Denver Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia.

Passport will be featured in print within active lifestyle publications including: Outside MagazineTravel and LeisureNational Geographic and Men’s Health.  Both the print and out of home campaign creative feature four different environments for Passport adventuring: desert, mountains, coastal and forest.

Additional integrated media for Passport includes partnerships with adventure-centric brands like ESPNGear PatrolOutsideand Havoc, tapping into adventure expert talent to showcase the Passport within active outdoor settings. Passport will also be featured through Honda’s immersive music (Honda Stage) and gaming properties (partnership with Twitch).
