Honda Opens Doors to U.S. Safety Research & Development Labs

  • Honda safety R&D center in Ohio led efforts to develop new airbag technology

Honda recently provided an immersive look into its safety research & development efforts as part of its “Safety for Everyone” initiative when it hosted a small group of media at the company’s R&D labs in Raymond, Ohio. The group interacted with top safety engineers, toured state-of-the-art test facilities, and spent some time behind the wheel to experience a variety of vehicle and pedestrian-related tests. Honda also showcased a new passenger front airbag designed to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities in a wider variety of frontal collisions. Plus, the company conducted a small overlap crash test of a 2019 Honda Civic to highlight its innovative crash safety features including the company’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure.

2019 Honda Passport Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Rating

  • Honda Sensing® Collision Mitigation Braking System™ rated Superior
  • Eighth 2019 Honda model to receive TSP or higher

 The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2019 Honda Passport a TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) rating1. The Passport also earned a “Superior” rating for its Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), part of the Honda Sensing® suite of driver assistive and safety technologies.

Passport comes with Honda Sensing® standard on all trims. In addition to CMBS™, Honda Sensing® includes Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

The 2019 Passport is the eighth Honda model to receive a top safety rating from the IIHS. Honda Announces New Passenger Front Airbag Design to Reduce Traffic Injuries and Fatalities in Wider Variety of Frontal Collisions

Honda today announced the development of an innovative new passenger front airbag technology designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda plans to begin applying its advanced airbag design to new products in the United States in 2020.

Development and testing of the new airbag was led by engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Ohio in partnership with Autoliv, one of the company’s safety systems suppliers. The new design is based on Honda’s commitment to developing technologies that better protect vehicle occupants in a wide range of crash scenarios. In 2017, upwards of 37,000 people lost their lives on U.S. roadways as a result of motor vehicle traffic crashes, a slight decrease from the previous two years, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“This new airbag technology represents Honda’s continuing effort to advance safety performance in a wider variety of crash scenarios and reflects the innovative thinking that our engineers are bringing to the challenge of reducing traffic injuries and fatalities,” said Jim Keller, President of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “Guided by Honda’s ‘Safety for Everyone’ commitment, our engineers recognize that their work on this type of breakthrough safety technology will have  far-reaching effects on peoples’ lives for many years to come.”

New Airbag Design

Honda’s next-generation airbag is designed to reduce the potential for injuries that can occur in a wider variety of frontal impacts. It is particularly beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant’s head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury.

Unlike conventional airbag systems that rely on a single inflatable compartment, the new system utilizes four major components: three inflated compartments — a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers that create a wide base across the dash — along with a “sail panel” that stretches between the two side chambers at their outermost edge. Operating something like a baseball catcher’s mitt, the sail panel catches and decelerates the occupant’s head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head, mitigating the potential for injury.

This next-generation airbag technology is the result of Honda engineers’ study of real-world crash events along with research and testing conducted at the company’s advanced safety research center in Raymond, Ohio. Honda’s Ohio safety center is one the most sophisticated facilities for safety research, development and testing in the world and includes facilities dedicated to advanced crash simulations, pedestrian safety, collision testing and advanced restraint system development and tuning.

In 2017, upwards of 37,000 people lost their lives on U.S. roadways as a result of motor vehicle traffic crashes, a slight decrease from the previous two years, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

New Airbag Design

Honda’s next-generation airbag is designed to reduce the potential for injuries that can occur in a wider variety of frontal impacts. It is particularly beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant’s head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury.

Unlike conventional airbag systems that rely on a single inflatable compartment, the new system utilizes four major components: three inflated compartments — a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers that create a wide base across the dash — along with a “sail panel” that stretches between the two side chambers at their outermost edge. Operating something like a baseball catcher’s mitt, the sail panel catches and decelerates the occupant’s head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head, mitigating the potential for injury.

This next-generation airbag technology is the result of Honda engineers’ study of real-world crash events along with research and testing conducted at the company’s advanced safety research center in Raymond, Ohio. Honda’s Ohio safety center is one the most sophisticated facilities for safety research, development and testing in the world and includes facilities dedicated to advanced crash simulations, pedestrian safety, collision testing and advanced restraint system development and tuning.

Honda Safety Leadership

Honda also is working to develop and deploy advanced passive safety and active safety systems that can reduce the severity of a collision or help avoid it entirely. In addition to passive safety systems such as airbags, seatbelts and advanced crash safety structures like the company’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, Honda is aggressively deploying its Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatch™ suites of safety and driver-assistive systems. Today, more than 2.5 million vehicles on U.S. roadways are utilizing these technologies, which are now standard or available on all 2019 and newer Honda models and standard on all 2019 and newer Acura sedans and SUVs.  The company has committed to making this broad suite of technologies standard on nearly all of its vehicles by 2022.

Honda Begins Final Phase of Takata Non-desiccated Airbag Inflator Recall Six Months Ahead of NHTSA Schedule

  • Phase 5 to occur ahead of NHTSA schedule due to significant Acura and Honda repair progress on existing recalls and adequate replacement parts supplies to repair all affected models
  • Prior to this expansion, Honda’s overall Takata inflator recall completion rate was 83.0%, including yearly scheduled recall expansions since May 2016
  • Since Phase 5 primarily includes Takata non-desiccated replacement inflators used in early recall repairs, the total number of recalled Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. does not change significantly with this action

In the fifth and final phase of planned recalls announced by NHTSA in May 2016, Honda will conduct recalls covering approximately 1.6 million Honda and Acura automobiles in the United States to replace, for free, Takata replacement front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. With this final action, taken six months ahead of NHTSA’s schedule, Honda has now recalled all Takata non-desiccated airbag inflators installed in Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States.

The inflators included in Phase 5 were used as replacement parts during early Takata airbag inflator recall repairs or were part of whole airbag modules replaced for other reasons prior to February 2017. Excluding vehicles subject to the earlier Takata driver airbag inflator recalls, only 59 additional Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. will become subject to a Takata airbag inflator recall for the first time because of this action.

Honda decided to take this action early, ahead of NHTSA’s planned expansion date in late December 2019, because it has made significant progress with existing recall repairs (83.0% completion rate as of 6/7/2019). The company also has adequate replacement parts, all from alternative suppliers, to repair all affected Acura and Honda models, including those in the expanded population. Thus, owners of affected vehicles should seek repair immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

In addition, all Honda Gold Wing motorcycles equipped with defective inflators in the U.S. were included in earlier recalls and remain eligible for repair. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to schedule repair at an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Replacement parts are available, all from alternate suppliers, to begin free recall repairs immediately, and a free rental car is available to the vehicle owner for the day of the recall repair or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable. Mailed notification to owners of recalled vehicles will begin in mid-August 2019. Since this recall primarily involves replacement inflators installed in vehicles previously subject to recall, the total number of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by Takata recalls does not change significantly with this action. The total number of recalled inflators does rise to approximately 22.6 million in approximately 12.9 million Honda and Acura automobiles that have been or now are subject to recall for replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in the United States. In addition, approximately 4,540 Honda Gold Wing motorcycles are subject to recall for the replacement of the Takata airbag inflator module. No motorcycle products are involved in the recall announced today.
